I have recently completed the ILM Level 3 Award in Leadership and Management through Turning Factor. Having not studied anything for nearly 10 years I was not sure what to expect from the course, and was nervous that I wouldn’t be able to answer questions or participate much, considering that I knew a lot of what I was going to learn was going to be totally new to me. I needn’t have worried at all. From the outset I was instantly put at ease, and the tutor always explained things as many times as necessary for everyone to understand – I never felt worried about having to ask for things to be gone over again.
The course was constructed in a way that allowed for a lot of interaction with the other members of the group and after day 1 it really felt like you knew everyone well, with the activities facilitating a great group dynamic. I believe that if it wouldn’t have been for the well thought through activities and areas of discussion, I personally wouldn’t have felt as comfortable talking openly in front of everyone and making suggestions and asking questions. Being at ease with everyone meant that even if something was suggested which was incorrect, no one made you feel stupid about anything, and instead everyone pitched in to make sure that all was clear before we moved on to the next section.
The course content itself was very well put together and having the activity packs to work through and make notes in meant that you finished the day with all of the information you needed to review the day’s material. I really enjoyed completing the assignments, as this allowed for me to pull everything that I had learnt together, helping me internalise everything we had learnt. Help from the tutor and all the others at Turning Factor between the course days was great for working through anything that needed further clarification for practical application or for any of the assignments.
In summary I would say this course was incredibly well run and structured. The days were broken down into edible chunks that enabled for breaks and discussion time so that information had time to sink it. Having a friendly and approachable course leader meant that everyone felt comfortable to participate, and the tutor’s depth of knowledge also meant that no question or query was left unanswered and was always explained in terms that everyone understood. This was a very enjoyable 4 day course and I have learnt a huge amount which I will be able use within my workplace and put into practice on a day-to-day basis. I would not hesitate to recommend this course and Turning Factor to others and I would definitely attend further courses in the future if the opportunity arises.
